What Is IATA ?

Established on 19 April 1945 in Havana, Cuba, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has become the principal catalyst for international cooperation among airlines. IATA’s mission is to promote safe, secure, reliable, and cost-efficient air transport, delivering value to both airlines and global consumers.

Since its founding, the international scheduled air transport industry has experienced extraordinary growth—expanding more than one hundredfold. This unprecedented progress is largely attributed to the global standards, recommended practices, and operational procedures developed and upheld by IATA, which continue to shape the efficiency and safety of modern aviation.

A Global Network of Aviation Excellence

At its inception, IATA brought together 57 airline members from 31 countries, primarily across Europe and North America. Today, the Association represents approximately 290 member airlines from over 120 countries, forming a truly global aviation network.

In April 2020, IATA marked its 75th anniversary, celebrating decades of collaboration with member airlines in advancing aviation as a powerful force for global connectivity, economic development, and freedom of movement.

Modern IATA is the direct successor to the International Air Traffic Association, originally founded in The Hague in 1919, coinciding with the launch of the world’s first international scheduled air services—an historic milestone in global aviation.
